14.12    Another example: To perform spells over ointments so as to peddle them to the marks, they take camel fat and dissolve it with oil of unhulled sesame seeds till it turns into a fine hard kind of fat. Then they grind mahaleb cherry kernels, add the extract to this fat, and mix the two together well. Next, they tint the mixture with waras, and finally they say spells over it. If a chronically sick person rubs himself with this and continues doing so for some time, he will be cured, and the charlatan will claim that this is because the ointment is composed of seven apothecary’s simples, including pine-nut oil.184 He says over it whatever spells he feels like and prattles his patter.
